Sevier County property of William Moon (1744-1822) and his descendants

 

The proof of the line from William Moon (1744 - 1822) to son John (1774) to William (abt1800)
is attributed to the land that was passed down from father to son.

• William (1744-1822) had 385 acres surveyed in March 1807, and this land was granted
   to him in October 1808 as Tennessee State Land Grant No. 385A

   

• William (1744-1822) dies, and there is some disagreement between his sons John and
  Jonas about their father's estate. The issue (and satisfactory resolution) is recorded in
  the minutes of the Forks of the Little Pigeon Baptist Church in 1824-1825.

   

• In 1827, John Moon acquires an additional 45 acre land grant in Sevier county TN
  adjoining the original property owned by his father William Moon (1744-1822).
  
  

• In 1837, John Moon's wife Susannah appears in the tax list as property owner of the above
  land. It is assumed John has passed away. William Moon (1800) also appears, though
  without any property.
  
  

• Susannah passes away sometime after 1837. William (1800) and his family appear in the
  1840 census. However, about 1841, William dies and his widow Asenith marries Tunis Scott.

• An indenture filed in 1846 describes Asenith and Tunis Scott as selling the property of
  "the deceased William Moon" to pay debts. Asenith Scott is described as the widow of
  William Moon.  In the 1850s after the death of Asenith Scott, there are a several quit claim
  deeds by the children of William and Asenith Moon relinquishing their claim to the same
  land from the original land grants.

1789 - Will of Samuel Horn, of Greene County, North Carolina (later Tennessee),
of 1 May 1789. Executors were Andrew Horn and John Moon (Jefferson County Wills, 1: 77-78).
Included in the estate inventory was "One debt due the estate of Michael Inggill of Pennsylvania
in the County of Northumberland which the said Samuel Horn decd went to collect...
(Jefferson County Wills, 1: 214-217).

1802 – Power of attorney executed in Cocke County TN signed by seven people
believed to be the children of Catharina Meyer and Johannes (John) Parrot. 
These people are the legatees of Henry Meyer, Catharina’s father. The seven people
are Elizabeth Moon, Mary Shever, John Parrot, Henery Parrot, Barbary Loveday,
George Parrot, Susanna Moon.
Elizabeth Moon first married William Henderson, Sr. They had William, Jr who is named
with his mother as the heirs of Jesse Moon. (information concerning this power of attorney

Sevier County

1805 - The first record of William Moon (b. 1744)  in Sevier County is in September 1805
when he witnessed and signed the nuncupative will of his eldest son, Jesse Moon. 
Jesse leaves his entire estate to be divided equally between his wife Elizabeth Moon and
William Henderson her son. 

(I learned Nuncupative means that it was stated aloud and transcribed rather than written
because the person is gravely ill or mortally wounded.)

1805 - Jonas Moon in the Paw Paw Baptist Church records, Sevier County

1806 - Jonas Moon 400 acres Knox County, TN - on Knox Co tax list

1807 - On 20 March 1807, William Moon had 385 acres surveyed on the East Fork of the Little
Pigeon River in Sevier County. This land was then granted to him on 6 October 1808 as
Tennessee State Land Grant No. 268 upon payment of the sum of $38.55.

1807 - On 5 September 1807, Saphire (sic=Sophie) Moon, wife of William Moon, along with
John Moon, Polly Moon and Nathaniel Moon, were received as members by the Forks of the Little
Pigeon Baptist Church in Sevier County....

1821 - In November 1821, the Forks of the Little Pigeon Baptist Church decided to hold future
meetings at the homes of various members. Included was the home of William Moon.
Though he was not a member of the church, his wife and children were.

1822 - William Moon (1744) died 28 April 1822 presumably in Sevier County.
A grave in Jones Cemetery marked with the name "Wm. M. Moon" and no dates may be his.
Buried in the same cemetery is Ben Manning who was also a signatory of the 1788
Greene County petition. this could also be the headstone of his grandson William Moon.

1824 - The Minutes of the Forks of the Little Pigeon Baptist Church of July 1824 record that
"Brother John Moon and wife came and informed the church that he has difficulty with his brother
Jonas Moon in the division of his father's estate.”

1825 - In February 1825 the Forks of the Little Pigeon Baptist Church minutes report that
"A report of committee to report of settled difficulty between brothers Jonas and John Moon.
Bro. Rogers arose and reported for the committee that the said brothers came to a mutual
settlement of their differences.”

Death of Elizabeth Runion Leatherwood

I found these two mentions of the death of Elizabeth Leatherwood in 1887.  The first is from the Knoxville Daily Sentinel,  31 May 1887.  The second is from the Knoxville Journal and Tribune, 24 May 1887, just 2 days after her death. What a coincidence to find an article about deaths from an epidemic over 130 years ago on a website I signed up to use while quarantined during the current pandemic. 

Elizabeth Runion Leatherwood (1812-1887) is my husband's 4th great grandmother.

The papers of Mrs. Smith Binkley (Bertha May Hadley)

Recently, while cleaning out my husband's grandparents' home, his relatives came across some papers in an envelope labeled as both "mother's papers" and "Mrs. Smith Binkley's personal papers."  Because of my interest in genealogy, these papers were given to me.  I was told the papers had belonged to my husband's great grandfather's second wife Lou Pierson Ford.

These papers have become an interesting puzzle to me for two reasons.  First,  I can not find any family connection between Lou Pierson Ford and Bertha May Hadley Smith (Mrs. Smith Binkley).  According to Lou Ford's marriage records and her death certificate, her mother was named Maggie Sloan.  Second, this envelope contains what appear to be original documents dating from the early 1800s to the 1940s.  While the contents are mostly Warren County, Ohio land documents, included with them is an official handwritten copy of the will of a man named Abraham Kinder dated 1809!  I would be incredibly excited if someone just happened to find a will of someone connected to my family from the early 1800s.

So, what to do with these papers?  I'd love to figure out how "Aunt" Lou came to be in possession of this envelope.  I've briefly researched her tree and found trees of the Smith Binkley family on Ancestry.com.  I know that Lou Pierson was married twice before marrying my husband's great grandfather Ford in 1952.  She and her second husband William Johnson lived in Warren County, Ohio in the 1930s and 40s.  Some papers belonging to William Johnson are in the envelope also.  Is he connected to the Binkley family somehow?  And how do I share this information with Warren County Ohio researchers?  These papers include several family names:  Kinder, Reeder, Robinson, Drake,Chambers, Parker.

I'm trying to sort and label them now and will probably try to scan some of the documents for posting here.  However, I've noticed that just being around these old papers
for too long begins to bother my breathing, so I'll need to be careful how much time I spend.  In the meantime,  if you have suggestions or information on any of the families mentioned, please let me know!  If you are a descendant of  Mrs. Smith Binkley, I'd love to hear from you too.

Among my husband's grandmother's photos, I found a photocopy of this picture and another page with a list of possible identifications.  I created the labeled scan of the photo above.  My husand's grandmother Frances Smith is seated on the second row next to her sister Annie.  Frances was born in 1924 and Annie was born in 1922.  This picture was most likely taken in Clanton, Alabama where they lived.  If you see someone you recognize who was not identified in the photo, please let me know!

Burials in High Log Cemetery, Bullock County, Alabama

While going through old photos and documents that belonged to my husband's grandparents, I came across a photocopy of seven typed pages entitled "Burials in High Log Cemetery, Bullock County, Alabama" compiled by James W. May, August 24, 1978.

Notes that were written on the title page before it was photocopied say, "In 1979, Dr. May was professor at Emory, and possibly a Methodist Minister.  His mother was an Eidson and lived at Fitzpatrick.  He & his cousin, Bill Eidson, were searching for some relative of theirs."

The handwritten notes also say that this cemetery was known as Crow Cemetery and many of the graves are probably African-Americans.  Dr. May indicates there are a large number of unmarked graves as well.

Moon relatives of Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois

The civil war split the Moon family of Sevier County TN. 

My husband's ancestor William Mitchel Moon served in Co I 2nd TN Cavalry USA.  William Mitchel's brother John served in Co A 3rd TN Cavalry USA.  John's service was cut short when he was accidentally shot and killed when a pistol went off in camp.  His death is recounted in the book "Loyal Mountain Troopers."

Their brother James Moon, however,  served in Co B 4th TN Cavalry CSA.  After the war, James settled in McDonough County, Illinois.  Many of his descendants still live there.

James's grandson John Moon served his country in WWII and lived to be  over 100 years old.  He was interviewed in 2014 for the Library of Congress's Veteran's History project.  You can read the transcript of his interview online.  Interview with John L Moon

James's daughter-in-law Sadie Moon, wife of his son Frank, became a local hero in her community by helping those who were sick or in need.  She was known as Mother Moon.  Today she is remembered by a scholarship in her honor and a local  memorial to women who have made significant contributions to the community. The website for Monticello provides research materials and genealogical information regarding President Thomas Jefferson's family.  My husband shares ancestors with both President Jefferson and Capt. Meriwether Lewis.

My husband is descended from Judith Jefferson Farrar, Thomas Jefferson's paternal aunt.

He is also descended from Francis Meriwether, the maternal uncle of Capt. Meriwether Lewis, shown in this genealogical chart of Lucy Meriwether Marks.
